Runtime is a versatile run tracking application that leverages advanced features available in iOS 8, as well as the capabilities of iPhone 5s and iPhone 6. It allows users to effectively monitor their running activities by tracking route, time, speed, pace, and altitude across various settings such as running, walking, hiking, or jogging.

The app provides seamless integration with Apple Watch, enabling users to control their runs directly from their wrist. Through the Apple Watch functionality, users can initiate runs and access vital statistics including pace, distance, time, location, split times, and elevation profile—all while on the move. The Apple Watch experience transforms into a highly advanced stopwatch conveniently placed on the wrist.

Moreover, there are options to manage workouts outside of the stopwatch widget. Users can quickly launch new runs via Notification Center, pause ongoing runs without accessing the app interface, and monitor key metrics such as time, distance, and steps directly from the Today screen.

The inclusion of the Shoe Closet feature allows users to track the mileage of their running shoes by adding them to Runtime. This aids in automatically logging how far each pair has been used over time.

Users can also view their data visually by organizing routes and times into specific locations and accessing enriched 3D map imagery for each run. Detailed insights into pace and elevation metrics are readily available for every tracked activity.

Runtime effectively utilizes the M7 motion co-processor to function as a pedometer. Users can easily check step counts for daily and weekly intervals from a straightforward menu interface. In addition, it identifies periods of rest during a run by color-coding activity—highlighting walking time in yellow and normal activity in orange.

For those interested in sharing their workouts, Runtime allows exporting KML and GPX files compatible with other applications. GPX files can be beneficial for geotagging photographs or for simulating locations within Xcode.

The app offers essential tracking features within HealthKit, along with options to begin new runs using the stopwatch widget and visualize detailed route maps—all for free.

Further enhancements can be accessed through Runtime’s Advanced Features upgrade, which includes:

 <li>Deferred Location updates to conserve battery during long-distance runs (compatible with iPhone 5 and newer)</li>
